Betsy DeVos Sets The Stage For Conservative Education Reform

Betsy DeVos was nominated by President Trump for the position of Secretary of Education. After a lengthy Senate hearing, and a rather divisive argument from both sides of the political aisle, Betsy DeVos would be narrowly confirmed to her position. After such a close call, many Cabinet members might have decided to lay low for a little while. Betsy DeVos didn’t do that, of course, because that is not who she is. Betsy DeVos is a proud reformer, a vocal conservative, and the newest champion for educational reform in the United States of America. With President Trump at the helm, DeVos has a chance to bring change to America’s school system in a way that we simply haven’t seen in the United States in a long, long time.

While Betsy DeVos is new to the federal government, she is not new to playing a part in the realm of politics. Born and raised in Michigan, Betsy DeVos has spent the past 30 years as a prominent member of the Michigan Republican Party. She’s been vocal in her support of education reform and has almost been solely responsible for giving conservatives a platform to rally around. That platform, of course, is school choice. Inspired by the works of Milton Friedman, specifically his 50-year-old paper on ‘The Role of Government in Education’, DeVos has been working to engineer conservative change for a long, long time.

Betsy DeVos has served as a chairman on several Michigan Republican Committees and she has even established several of her own foundations geared toward bringing education reform to the rest of the country. Her focus through all of this has been on school choice, or educational choice. Simply put, school choice is a conservative argument for public funding to go toward private schools, charter schools, and religious schools. Betsy DeVos, like many conservatives, doesn’t believe that public education institutions should be the sole recipient of tax aid when so many students are being put into private education practices. Why should those parents be punished for tailoring their education to the specific needs of their children?

Mike Cox is a former state-level Attorney General on the Republican side of the aisle and he is someone who has known Betsy DeVos for quite awhile. When Cox was probed about Betsy DeVos’s role in the federal government, he was quick to admit that she inspired fear in her political opponents due to the fact that she is razor sharp, able to go toe-to-toe with anyone, and willing to get into the mud for her beliefs. Mike Cox is like many other prominent conservatives who are coming to the realization that Betsy DeVos may be the key to inspiring real, long-lasting change in the conservative political platform.
