The Plot

The setting is New York City. Not much is revealed about the times and nature of the society besides the insinuation of a dangerous time after Natalie (Rebel Wilson) encounters a robber who tries to steal from her.

The plight of women is sharply focused on when Natalie, an architect is assigned less professional errands to run at work; like delivering coffee. Moreover, women’s’ vulnerability in this society is highlighted when Natalie encounters a robber where she has an episode of head trauma as she tries to thwart the mugging.

The story is based on the life of Natalie, an architect who had all along been brought up to think that romantic films were just utopian delinquencies and that love was not real. Her mother Jennifer Saunders told her from the outset that the movies made were not about girls like them.

She maintains this view till adulthood and is blind to love. Resultantly, she ignores Josh’s (Adam Devine) who is smitten for her. Josh is her best friend at work, and seemingly her knight in shining armor. She is at the center of a love story, but how aloof she appears. The encounter with the robber and the subsequent loss of consciousness by Natalie opens her eyes. She wakes up to self-conscious of her existence in a reserved utopian world surrounded by love.

For one, in this fantasy world she is charming and attracts Blake (Liam Hemsworth) by her beguiling beauty. Additionally, Josh finds love in Isabella (Priyanka Chopra), a yoga model. Even so, she must overcome past frustrations and expectations to allow her to fall in love and bring back the real world.

The satire in “isn’t it Romantic” lies in its following a romantic comedy plot in its criticism of romantic comedies.

The success of this film is hinged on Rebel Wilson’s perfect transformation and cognizance of her leading role. Her prowess is well known. In 2011, she made it to the “top ten comics to watch” list.

Isn’t it Romantic is her latest work where she stars. She has transformed into a confident, funny albeit humble actor sharply contrasting the shy and reserved girl she was.
